Let’s dive into some interesting trivia about these two amazing destinations that will make you want to pack your bags and explore:

Trivia about Ilocos Sur

  1. Vigan: A Step Back in Time
Ilocos Sur’s capital, Vigan, is one of the most well-preserved Spanish colonial towns in the country. It’s so historic that it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site! The Calle Crisologo is lined with cobblestone streets and heritage houses, giving visitors a real feel of how life was back in the 18th century. Don’t miss out on a kalesa (horse-drawn carriage) ride through this charming town—it’s like traveling through history.

  2. The St. Paul’s Cathedral
The St. Paul’s Cathedral in Vigan is one of the oldest churches in the Philippines, built in 1790. Its baroque architecture and colorful murals inside are breathtaking, making it a must-see for visitors who appreciate history and architecture.

  3. Sinait Salt-Making Tradition
Ilocos Sur is also known for its centuries-old salt-making tradition in Sinait. The salt harvested from the local sea is a key ingredient in many Ilocano dishes. It’s a unique and fascinating part of the province's culture and economy.

Trivia about Ilocos Norte

  1. Paoay Church: A UNESCO Treasure
Located in Ilocos Norte, Paoay Church (also known as the San Agustin Church) is famous for its massive, earthquake-resistant buttresses. Built in the 17th century, it’s one of the oldest churches in the Philippines and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its stunning architecture and historical significance make it a top attraction for visitors.

  2. Pagudpud’s Beaches
If you’re a fan of white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters, then Pagudpud in Ilocos Norte should be on your list. Known for its natural beauty, Pagudpud is home to beaches like Blue Lagoon and Saud Beach, both of which are perfect for a relaxing getaway or a fun day of water sports.

  3. Bangui Windmills: Harnessing Renewable Energy
Ilocos Norte is home to the Bangui Windmills, the first and largest wind farm in Southeast Asia. These massive wind turbines along the coastline are not only an engineering marvel but also an important step towards renewable energy in the region. The sight of the windmills against the backdrop of the ocean is truly breathtaking!

The MalacaΓ±ang of the North in Paoay, Ilocos Norte, was the Marcos family’s official residence in the north. Built in the 1970s, it offers stunning views of Paoay Lake and features a blend of traditional and modern architecture. Now a museum, it  showcases memorabilia from the Marcos era, including personal items and portraits. Restored and open to the public, it’s a great spot for history buffs to learn about the Marcos legacy and enjoy the scenic surroundings.

Whether you're strolling through the historic streets of Vigan, soaking up the sun in Pagudpud, or marveling at the Bangui Windmills, both Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte have so much to offer. From cultural landmarks to pristine beaches and innovative renewable energy, these provinces are a perfect blend of old and new, history and nature. So, if you're planning your next adventure, don’t forget to add Ilocos to your list!

Baluarte in Vigan, Ilocos Sur, is owned by Chavit Singson, a former governor of Ilocos Sur. He opened it to the public as a wildlife park and tourist attraction to promote local tourism. The park features a variety of animals, gardens, and historical displays, offering visitors a chance to enjoy nature and learn about the region’s heritage. It’s free to enter, making it a popular stop for tourists in Vigan.
